Weichán Auka Mapu Claimed Arson Attack and Threatened Regional Director of Gendarmerie
The organization Weichán Auka Mapu left pamphlets claiming responsibility for a new arson attack carried out on Wednesday night in a forestry property in the commune of Arauco, in the Biobío Region, with messages directed at the regional director of Gendarmerie, Leonardo Barrientos.
The attack recorded in the Ramadillas area resulted in two forestry machines being destroyed.
After the attack, Carabineros and Navy personnel found two pamphlets mentioning Leonardo Barrientos; one alluding to a policy of "an eye for an eye" and another accusing Gendarmerie as a "corrupt" institution.
"CYCLE OF VIOLENCE"
René Muñoz, president of the Association of Forestry Contractors, stated that this incident "is the northernmost attack we have had in the Province of Arauco since 2014" and expressed concern over how the "state of violence continues to progress steadily without restraint," despite the constitutional state of exception in place for the area.
In this way, he criticized that "only this morning did the police forces and Navy personnel arrive" at the scene, emphasizing that the security measures in the area "are of no use to forestry contractors" and that they fear remaining "in this cycle of violence."
