After New Attack in Tirúa, Forestry Contractor Pleads: "Please, We Need to Work in Peace"

A new attack was recorded this Monday in the commune of Tirúa, in the Biobío Region, after hooded individuals forced a driver to exit a van used to transport forestry workers. The vehicle was burned, and pamphlets signed by the group Weichán Auka Mapu were left behind.

This is the first attack in the area since the state of emergency in the southern macrozone ended this weekend. Regarding the incident, Captain Cristián Vallejos, deputy commissioner of Carabineros in Tirúa, reported that the driver informed them that "unknown individuals, hooded and armed with firearms, allegedly threatened and intimidated him, forcing him to exit his vehicle before setting it on fire."

René Muñoz, manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, stated that "just two days after the state of emergency expired, the first attack on a forestry contracting company in Tirúa has occurred. We want to highlight this because it is the first attack since the state of emergency was lifted, but it is the seventh we have recorded in March alone."

"The upward trend in these types of actions continues with or without a state of emergency, and this is our plea to the new authorities: Please, we need to work in peace and tranquility," he implored.

UNDERSECRETARY CANCELS MEETING WITH VICTIMS

A visit by Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve to the area was scheduled for this Monday, where he was supposed to meet with the Foundation for Victims of Terrorism. However, the meeting did not take place.

Its president, Fernando Fuentealba, expressed "deep regret over the cancellation by Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve, who was supposed to meet with victims and their leaders here in the city of Cañete."

"We urgently call on the authorities, both the undersecretary and the Minister of the Interior, to receive us in Santiago. We have no problem traveling, but we need to meet once and for all to hear firsthand what strategy they will implement in our area to restore security, the rule of law, and peaceful coexistence for the residents of Arauco Province," he requested.
