Violent early morning in Arauco and La Araucanía: trucks burned, a campsite attacked, and shots fired at Carabineros
Burned trucks, a shooting attack against a Carabineros checkpoint, and a destroyed campsite are among the violent incidents recorded in the early hours of this Wednesday in the province of Arauco, in the Bío Bío region, and in the La Araucanía region.
Attacks in at least two locations in the province of Arauco were reported during the early hours of this Wednesday. Violence was also reported in the La Araucanía region, including the destruction of a campsite.
In Curanilahue, Bío Bío region, two trucks, a pickup truck, and a guard post were completely destroyed in an arson attack.
A video obtained by Radio Bío Bío shows the scale of the attack in Curanilahue.
Specifically, the incident occurred in the Cancha El Topo area, near the border between the provinces of Arauco and Concepción.
At the Tacna property, about eight kilometers away, authorities are investigating the burning of a crane.
In Tirúa, also in the province of Arauco, unidentified individuals fired at a Carabineros checkpoint, specifically in the Quidico area. Armed, hooded individuals traveling in two pickup trucks arrived at the scene and opened fire on the checkpoint, prompting officers to repel the attack.
Radio Bío Bío reporters noted trees blocking the P-40 Route, which connects Arauco with Lebu.
In the La Araucanía region, unidentified individuals attacked a tourist center between Victoria and Curacautín, burning at least five cabins and a truck.
The targeted site was the Marie Groslaine tourist center. Firefighters from Victoria worked to control the flames, while Carabineros Public Order personnel arrived to begin initial investigations.
Five armed, hooded individuals arrived at the campsite and threatened the owner of the property.
A banner referencing the release of members of the Lof Elicura community was found at the site.
Events that marked the day before the attacks in Arauco and La Araucanía
Various incidents were reported on Tuesday in the province of Arauco and the La Araucanía region, which may be related to Wednesday's attacks.
In Arauco, two people were arrested near Horcones on Route 160 for the crime of timber theft.
In protest of this arrest, others, in support of the detainees, blocked the road for at least an hour.
In the same province, a man involved in the murder of Eleodoro Raimán, identified as Esteban Carrera Zuñiga, was arrested while carrying a weapon and ammunition.
In the La Araucanía region, the Traiguén Guarantee Court convicted Emilio Berkhoff for his involvement in an arson attack and violent robbery in the Lumaco commune.
During the trial, Berkhoff admitted his participation in the incident and now faces at least seven years in prison.
Simultaneously, he is under investigation for his involvement in the trafficking of nearly one ton of drugs.
