Supreme Court Calls for Coordination Among Authorities Over Violence in Biobío
It ordered the authorities of the provinces of Arauco and Biobío to coordinate actions to prevent acts of violence in the area, which have been occurring over the past few years.
The highest court upheld a protective appeal this Wednesday, filed on behalf of business owners, workers, and trade associations, and ordered the presidential delegates of the Biobío Region, Daniela Dresdner, and of Arauco Province, Javier Ponce, to "promptly, after coordinating with the relevant ministries, implement a plan of measures aimed at ensuring efficient and comprehensive protection for individuals or social groups whose rights have been threatened, with the goal of preventing such incidents from recurring against them."
The Supreme Court described the Government's actions as "arbitrary and insufficient to address the criminal acts that persist in the southern part of the country."
The appeal was upheld by the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court, composed of justices Sergio Muñoz, Ángela Vivanco, Adelita Ravanales, Mario Gómez, and attorney María Cristina Gajardo. It is worth recalling that, in the first instance, the Court of Appeals of Concepción rejected the appeal filed by the workers, which led to the appeal being brought before the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, the manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, René Muñoz, praised the court's decision:
"This is good news for forestry contractors, forestry workers, and their families, because it compels the presidential delegation and the authorities, who are responsible for order and security in the Biobío region, to sit down with contractors and discuss the measures needed to control, mitigate, and begin reducing violence," said the spokesperson.
