Forestry Contractors: "We have suffered nine arson attacks, equivalent to one every 2.7 days"
The Association of Forestry Contractors assessed the attacks on forestry operations during Gabriel Boric's administration, emphasizing "the irreversible damage being done to such an important sector of this country's economy."
The Association of Forestry Contractors, Acoforag, addressed the arson attacks recorded in the southern macro-zone during the current administration of President Gabriel Boric, highlighting the "irreversible damage being done to such a vital sector of this country's economy."
Specifically, they stated that "24 days into President Gabriel Boric's term, the toll of terrorist attacks and damage to forestry contractors is as follows: one terrorist attack in the province of Cautín, three terrorist attacks in the province of Arauco, and five terrorist attacks in the province of Malleco—totaling nine arson attacks, equivalent to one attack every 2.7 days."
They further emphasized that "we want to draw the new government's attention to the irreversible harm being inflicted on such a crucial sector of this country's economy, a pillar of sustainable development in the southern regions. We remind these new authorities that the forestry sector generates 300,000 direct and indirect jobs and supports 1.2 million people."
Along the same lines, they added, "merely providing resources and logistics to the police is not enough. As we have expressed to Undersecretary of the Interior Mr. Manuel Monsalve, there must be political will to govern for all the country's inhabitants, setting aside rhetoric that paralyzes us. How is it possible that, in the 21st century with today's technological capabilities, no perpetrators or participants in these terrorist acts of violence have been apprehended?"
Finally, they declared, "it is urgent to bring stakeholders from the territories to the table to begin addressing this issue that affects us all and has caused so much harm to the residents of the southern regions. But it is equally urgent for law enforcement to be more efficient, yield results, and arrest the criminals operating with impunity in the area. Workers and forestry contractors continue to wait for the State and authorities to provide conditions JUST SO WE CAN DO OUR JOBS IN PEACE."
