Mapuche Community Member Fugitive for Homicide in Cañete Arrested, Alleged Brother of RML Leader
Carabineros (Chilean police) managed to arrest Camilo Astete Catrileo (33), a Mapuche community member who was a fugitive from justice. The individual was supposed to serve a 6-year sentence for the crimes of simple homicide and arson endangering people.
The arrest took place this Sunday in the Paicaví sector of the commune of Cañete, in the province of Arauco,Bío Bío region. There, the apprehended individual was participating in a rural soccer match as part of the local championship league.
According to police reports, Astete Catrileo had an active arrest warrant from the Cañete Guarantee Court for a conviction in January of this year due to his involvement in simple homicide and arson.
Additionally, the detainee is allegedly an active member of the RML (Resistencia Mapuche Lafkenche) group and identified as the brother of one of its leaders, who are accused of rural violence incidents in the Arauco province.
The community member was transferred to the corresponding police unit, where standard procedures were carried out. Later, he was placed at the disposal of the competent court, which will determine his legal status.
The Prosecutor's Office confirmed that the accused will appear before the Cañete Court this Monday and must then enter prison to serve his sentence.
