Less than three days had passed since the new squatting law came into effect last Friday—published in the Official Gazette that same day—until the first eviction under this legislation was carried out this Monday, an operation that resulted in five people detained in the La Araucanía Region.

According to police reports, the incident occurred in the afternoon when officers from Carabineros' Public Order Control (COP) unit arrived at the Palermo estate, located at kilometer 11 of Route R-35 in the commune of Collipulli, where a group of approximately ten people were peacefully occupying the property.

In this context, the owner filed a formal complaint with the Public Prosecutor's Office, which then ordered the eviction of the aforementioned property, as stipulated by the law.

At approximately 4:20 p.m., officers from the 2nd Collipulli Police Station met with specialized support personnel to carry out the specific order issued by the Prosecutor's Office, successfully evicting the occupants and apprehending five individuals—all adult men—under the aforementioned squatting law.

Following the operation, Interior Minister Carolina Tohá stated, "This new law, now in effect, provides effective tools to law enforcement by establishing that squatting will always be a crime and that Carabineros can evict and detain, including cases of non-violent squatting."
