Authorities in Lumaco held a Disaster Risk Management Committee (Cogrid) to prevent forest fires ahead of the season in various areas of theAraucanía region.

The meeting aimed to analyze the steps needed to prevent and respond to potential emergencies in the area, thereby moving past the devastating effects of the previous summer.

Regarding the meeting, Lumaco Mayor Richard Leonelli described it as positive, emphasizing the need to create firebreaks along roads as a preventive measure.

"Quite concrete operational measures were discussed to start working immediately, such as firebreaks and how to handle the peak heat season to hopefully prevent what will surely happen—it’s inevitable," he stated.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Delegate of Malleco, Andrea Parra, said the topics covered in the meeting indicate good preparation for the upcoming season.

Senapred’s Perspectives for Cogrid

On the other hand, the Regional Director of Senapred, Janet Medrano, highlighted the importance of these Cogrid meetings, stating they allow for better-prepared responses to forest fires.

"This Cogrid aims to strengthen coordination and preparation for the forest fire season, mainly by reviewing lessons from the previous season and identifying gaps, areas needing reinforcement, and inter-institutional coordination."

Also participating in the meeting were the Regional Director of Conaf, María Teresa Huentequeo; the Carabineros Zone Chief, General Manuel Cifuentes; and Army Commander Felipe Palazuelos.

Additionally, various members of the presidential cabinet in the region were present.

Finally, given the anticipated severe forest fire season due to expected high summer temperatures, the Ministry of Agriculture announced a historic budget to combat these emergencies.

The allocated resources increased by 47% compared to last year, amounting to 148 billion pesos—a figure that will keep 70 aircraft and over 3,300 firefighters operational from the Atacama to Magallanes regions.
