"Enough of the enlightened": Acoforag slams INDH director for proposing dialogue with CAM

"It is irresponsible and reckless." This is how the Association of Forestry Contractors A.G. (Acoforag) described the statements made by the director of the National Institute of Human Rights (INDH) when proposing a dialogue table with "more extreme" groups in the Southern Macrozone, such as the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM).

"We believe there should be a broad dialogue where everyone must sit at the table" and that it is important for "that dialogue to be led by someone with political power and for everyone to be seated at the table," stated Consuelo Contreras, adding that "the necessary condition for everyone to sit at the table is that there must be a situation of peace."

In response, Acoforag declared that "it is irresponsible and reckless for a state official, who works at a human rights institution and has never concerned herself with the human rights of the thousands of victims of terrorist groups, to express this opinion."

"Enough of the enlightened ones from Santiago proposing ideological solutions under circumstances they neither know nor have set foot in the territory, much less suffered what many victims in southern Chile have endured," they added in a statement.

While they claim to believe in a political solution to the violence in the Southern Macrozone, they argue that it "must emerge from the consensus of the inhabitants who are currently suffering and who know its origin and solution."

Government labels possible dialogue table as "political fiction"

It should be noted that after Contreras' statements, Government spokesperson Minister Camila Vallejo stated that "we will always be available to dialogue with those who want to dialogue, and we cannot dialogue with those who are unwilling to do so."

Now, specifically regarding a potential dialogue table with CAM, she responded that it is "political fiction," as so far "we have no signal of willingness to dialogue."

"If there are actors who are truly willing to dialogue—and that means not dialoguing with a gun on the table, because that is not how dialogue works—then we will talk because the main goal is to deliver solutions, perhaps shared ones, so they can be stable over time and not vanish in a month due to a lack of broad consensus," she concluded.
