La Araucanía Drags the Country to 17th Place in Global Terrorism Ranking
This week, the Global Terrorism Index (see here GTI-2023-web.pdf) for 2023 was released, placing Chile in the 17th position globally out of 163 countries.
The report specifies that the country experienced 1,170 terrorist attacks, resulting in 20 deaths between 2012 and 2022. Most of the attacks and half of the deaths occurred in the last two years.
Chile was "the most impacted non-conflict country" by terrorism, but regionally, it ranked second, only surpassed by Colombia, which holds the 15th position.
Deputy Jouannet
"We did it. We managed to worsen Chile's ranking in terrorism. We remain the second country with the most terrorism in the region, but we moved up one spot—for the worse: from 18th to 17th," said La Araucanía deputy Andrés Jouannet (Amarillos).
"What needs to be done is, with true political will, to go after terrorist groups, intervene in territorialist groups, and for that, the State has instruments and tools—there’s the Prosecutor's Office, the Government, and the Parliament to legislate—but we need the Executive to send the laws," stated the lawmaker.
"It's time now; we cannot remain condemned to terrorism in La Araucanía. This index shows that terrorism is concentrated in the Southern Macrozone. We can’t keep making excuses; a year has passed, and the Government has the duty, the obligation, to combat terrorism in La Araucanía. For that, it has the tools, but it must act seriously," emphasized Andrés Jouannet.
According to the deputy, La Moneda must have the will, empower Carabineros and the military, and put an end to terrorism in La Araucanía and the terrorist gangs in the region, which currently plague defenseless families, especially in rural areas.
