Firefighter Battling Blaze Injured by Pellet Shot in La Araucanía
A forestry firefighter was injured after being hit by shrapnel this afternoon in Los Sauces, in the La Araucanía Region.
According to details provided by Carabineros, the forestry workers were battling a fire at the San Luis estate since 09:30 this morning, a process that lasted until around 15:40.
This occurred while a support operation was simultaneously being carried out by Public Order Control (COP) personnel. "Once in Los Sauces, COP personnel were informed via phone by the head of the forestry brigades about shots fired by unknown individuals at the workers' transport bus," stated the institution.
The bus was leading the convoy, while COP personnel closed the line to protect it. Despite the gunfire, the bus with the workers did not stop, leaving one forestry worker with minor injuries caused by shrapnel from the attack.
For now, he is in stable condition at the Los Sauces CESFAM. The incident occurred in the same area where, on Saturday, around 200 forestry firefighters were intimidated by gunfire. Meanwhile, the blaze they were fighting has been active for over a week and has consumed approximately 1,300 hectares.
Upon learning of the incident, RN deputy Jorge Rathgeb urged the government to "take a hard line" against the acts of violence recorded in the La Araucanía Region. He also emphasized that "this group of violent criminals has absolute disregard for the lives of others. They do not hesitate to try to kill or injure people performing lawful work; they do not hesitate to harm those trying to extinguish fires affecting wildlife and flora."
