Mapuche community member remanded in custody following extortion complaint for $18 million from landowner
Carabineros arrested a Mapuche community member accused of extorting $18 million from a landowner in exchange for not burning his property.
The suspect allegedly met with the victim earlier this year at a commercial establishment, where they agreed on a large-value cashier's check.
After today's hearing, the court ruled that the accused will remain in pretrial detention.
What happened?
The individual is Guillermo Ñirripil Cheuquepán, a 50-year-old man who threatened the landowner with burning a pine forest on his property.
The suspect, who is also a leader of the Miguel Cheuquepán community in Lautaro, Araucanía Region, was arrested by Carabineros' OS9 unit in Temuco's Plaza de Armas, outside Banco Security, after enforcing his demand.
According to the Prosecutor's Office, the detainee already had an active arrest warrant for another extortion crime.
