A Mapuche leader became the second person arrested in the investigation into a multi-million dollar extortion case involving a private individual, who was allegedly threatened with having his property burned in Lautaro.

Recall that on Tuesday, lonco Guillermo Enrique Ñirripil Cheuquepan, from the Miguel Cheuquepán community, was arrested and charged with extortion.

According to reports, the leader allegedly demanded $18 million from a forest owner in exchange for not burning the property.

After being formally charged, Ñirripil was placed in preventive detention, with a three-month deadline set for the investigation to conclude.

This Wednesday, meanwhile, the arrest of a second suspect involved in the crime was confirmed.

The individual is the werkén of the same Lautaro community, accused of accompanying the lonco in each of their actions, including threats, property damage, and arson attempts.

As confirmed by Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve, the investigation had been underway for some time, allowing authorities to gather all relevant evidence.
