Senate Approves Extension of State of Emergency in Southern Macrozone, Monsalve Announces Trip to La Araucanía
With 34 votes in favor, three against, and three abstentions, the Senate approved a new extension of the State of Emergency in the Southern Macrozone, exactly on the day marking one year since its implementation.
The Executive's request to extend the measure in the Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío, in the Biobío Region, passed this morning in the Chamber of Deputies, where it was approved with 96 votes in favor, 36 against, and three abstentions.
In the Lower House, the UDI caucus opposed the measure and rejected it as a bloc, demanding that the Executive implement a State of Siege in the area, arguing that the current deployment is insufficient to combat crime.
In the Senate, Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve stated that "rejecting the State of Emergency could only worsen security conditions in the Southern Macrozone" and announced that he will travel to La Araucanía on Friday to meet with the Head of National Defense to strengthen the strategies and control measures being implemented.
With this, Congress renewed the military deployment in the Araucanía and Biobío regions for the twenty-fourth time.
