La Araucanía: Business Alliance Insists State of Exception Is Insufficient to Prevent Attacks

The La Araucanía Business Alliance reiterated that the State of Exception in the Southern Macrozone is insufficient to prevent the series of arson attacks.

In this regard, they called on political and police authorities to change the security strategy to anticipate acts of violence or enable the arrest of perpetrators.

The analysis reviewed April 2023 and concluded that the most significant violent incidents overall show a slight average decrease compared to the two previous years without a State of Exception.

However, arson attacks, which account for 76% of violent actions in the Southern Macrozone, show no variation compared to 2021 and 2022, when there was no State of Emergency.

The president of the La Araucanía Business Alliance, Patricio Santibáñez, reiterated that the State of Exception has worked but not enough, urging authorities to change the police strategy.

The study compared the effectiveness of States of Exception, showing that Sebastián Piñera's government achieved greater effectiveness than the one imposed by Gabriel Boric, with a 15% increase in violent actions during the current administration.

Additionally, it asserts a trend of territorial expansion of the security crisis to other regions of the country, affecting productive sectors such as forestry, agriculture, construction, salmon farming, and tourism.

According to the analysis of attacks in March, one in three was claimed by the Arauco-Malleco Coordinator (CAM), with groups like the Mapuche National Liberation Movement and Weichan Auka Mapu gaining strength.

Finally, the Business Alliance stated that the legislative branch must send clear signals to accelerate laws supporting public order efforts, and the Judiciary must safeguard the security of victims and witnesses to ensure protection for those affected by violent acts.
