Congress approves new extension of state of emergency in the Southern Macrozone amid requests to extend measure to Los Ríos
This Tuesday, Congress approved a new request from the government to extend the State of Constitutional Emergency in the Southern Macrozone for 15 days, a measure that has been in place for over a year in the La Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío in the Biobío Region.
The twenty-sixth extension requested by the Executive Branch was supported in the Lower House by 104 votes in favor, 24 against, and 12 abstentions. In the Senate, however, the vote was tighter and passed by just four votes: 23 in favor, one against, and 18 abstentions. The right-wing largely abstained as a pressure tactic for the Executive to consider their request to extend the measure further south to include the Los Ríos Region.
The approval of this new state of emergency in the Southern Macrozone comes amid opposition requests to extend the measure to the Los Ríos Region, following an arson attack last Saturday night by an unidentified group that destroyed 13 trucks during the construction of the Camán Wind Park, on the border of the communes of Paillaco and Valdivia in the aforementioned region.
Interior Minister Carolina Tohá stated that no measure established by law or the Constitution "is ruled out a priori" and emphasized that the government will assess the situation on the ground to evaluate options for the area.
