Southern Macrozone: Senate Approves New Extension of State of Exception

The Senate approved the extension of the constitutional state of emergency for 15 days in the southern macrozone, which is in effect in the La Araucanía region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío,in the Biobío region.
The measure—requested by the Executive—received 28 votes in favor, 2 against, and 2 abstentions in the Upper House. This marks the twenty-eighth extension of the state of exception since May 16, 2022.
Decrease in Violent Incidents
Present at the session was Undersecretary of the Interior Manuel Monsalve, who stated that violent incidents in the southern macrozone have decreased by 11% compared to the same period in 2022.
"There has been a sustained and significant decrease in violent incidents by 43%," the official said regarding the Biobío region.
Regarding the La Araucanía region, he noted that "there is no decrease in 2023 compared to 2022; rather, there is an upward trend of around 14%."
Finally, he addressed the Los Ríos region, which has also seen a decline. According to Manuel Monsalve, violent incidents dropped by 31% compared to 2022, but he emphasized that arson attacks increased by 83%: "they went from six in 2022 to eleven in 2023."
