Carabineros officers traveling in an armored vehicle were ambushed this Monday morning on a rural road in the commune of Ercilla, in theLa Araucanía region.

According to police reports, the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when they encountered a fallen tree blocking the road, forcing them to stop.

At that moment, a group of unidentified individuals opened fire on the vehicle, which sustained at least 18 bullet impacts. As a result, the officers were forced to retreat and flee the scene.

General Manuel Cifuentes of Carabineros in La Araucanía confirmed that the exit operation was successfully carried out, with no personnel injured.

Senator Demands Strengthened State Presence After Ambush on Carabineros

Republican Senator Carmen Gloria Aravena described the ambush on Carabineros as "an extremely serious incident," as it "could have ended in tragedy."

"Had they not been in an armored vehicle, we could have had dead or injured officers," she warned.

While she acknowledged that no injuries were reported, she emphasized that "what happened confirms the danger posed by radical organizations that control the area around Temucuici, as the ambush took place on an access route to that community."

"This should push the government to increase and reinforce the State's presence in that area and advance the processing of the bill to modernize the Anti-Terrorism Law and dismantle these dangerous criminal groups," she stated.

Finally, as of the closing of this report, no information is available regarding the perpetrators of the attack.
