On the night of last Friday, August 11, a cabin belonging to the Hammersley family was consumed by flames in the Paillahue sector, in the commune of Contulmo,Arauco province. The fire was started by unknown individuals who left no message or claim at the scene.

The Hammersley family, originally from Concepción, learned of the attack this Sunday and expressed their pain and helplessness over what happened.

George Hammersley, one of the homeowners, visibly distressed by the incident, recounted the ordeal his family is enduring, especially his 85-year-old mother, who lost her home.

“Tomorrow, we will go to the site as a family—all the siblings, everyone, with my 85-year-old mother. Imagine how this affects her. There, we’ll see what we can do. The main idea is to take better care, at least to prevent the land from being taken over. Because that’s what’s coming, what’s happening in the surrounding area. So, it’s a feeling of helplessness. There’s no rule of law—what is one’s property worth?” he said.

According to the family, the fire was responded to by firefighters, and no banners or pamphlets were found at the scene.

Under the instructions of the Public Prosecutor's Office, forensic investigations are being handled by Labocar, and those responsible for the incident have not yet been identified.

The Hammersley family also announced they will pursue all legal actions to defend their property and prevent a possible land occupation. Additionally, they expressed their fear over the lack of security in the area, despite the State of Exception currently in effect in Arauco province.

This is the latest in a series ofarson attacksthat have affected the Southern Macrozone in recent weeks.
