Congress Approves New Extension of State of Emergency for the Southern Macrozone

The full session of theSenateapproved this Wednesday a new request from the Government toextend for 15 days the constitutional state of emergency in the Southern Macrozone,a measure in effect in the La Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío, in the Biobío Region.
The measure was passed in the Upper House with 30 votes in favor, one against from independent senator Fabiola Campillai, and three abstentions: Luz Ebensperger (UDI), Sebastián Keitel (Evópoli), and Alejandra Sepúlveda (Federación Regionalista Verde Social).
It is worth recalling that the measure has been in effect for over a year in the area, after being decreed byPresident Gabriel Boric on May 16, 2022.
The measure had already been approved earlier in the day by the Chamber of Deputies, where it received 89 votes in favor, 27 against, and 16 abstentions.
As in the previous vote, UDI deputies rejected the renewal of the state of emergency in the Southern Macrozone and urged the Executive to study the implementation of a State of Siege in municipalities such as Ercilla and the southern part of Arauco Province.
In fact, the approval to extend the measure comes amid requests from opposition lawmakers todeclare a state of siege in the area,following the recent arson attacks recorded.
