Forestry Guilds of Bío Bío Accuse Government of Neglecting the Sector
The year 2023 ended with a negative balance for the Chilean forestry sector, especially for small forest owners and timber SMEs in the Bío Bío Region.
As evidence of this balance, there are the 400 thousand hectares that burned last summer, emphasized Michel Esquerré from PymeMad. Of that total, 50 thousand correspond to productive pine and eucalyptus plantations owned by small landowners who claim to have been abandoned by the government.
In the same vein, René Muñoz, manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors of Chile, spoke out. He pointed to the alleged neglect of forestry SMEs and the lack of progress on key legislative projects for the sector.
The warning from forestry guilds is that, if the State's neglect continues, it could jeopardize businesses in the industry, the jobs they generate, as well as the degradation of fire-affected lands and even the international commitments to reduce emissions by 2030.
