Chipping plants report a significant increase in Eucalyptus nitens production, marking a trend in the forestry industry.

Wood chip production in chipping plants reached 4,258,449 cubic meters in 2023, accounting for 61.5% of national production, according to Infor's report.

Over the past decade, the industry experienced fluctuations, with a historic peak of over 8.1 million cubic meters in 2018 and a low of 5.6 million in 2013. However, growth has been steady, especially in Eucalyptus nitens chip production, which now makes up 74.2% of the total, surpassing Eucalyptus globulus, historically the dominant species.

Eucalyptus nitens has gained impressive ground, rising from 30.1% of chip production in 2011 to 74.2% in 2023. This shift reflects a marked preference for this species in the industry. Although chip production from other species like Pinus radiata remains relevant at 10.8%, eucalyptus clearly dominates the sector.

Most of the chips produced are destined for the international market, with an average of 65.2% of total production exported in 2023. Eucalyptus species are the most in-demand abroad, with Eucalyptus globulus leading exports at 78.4% of its production, while Eucalyptus nitens also shows a strong presence, with 70.1% of its production exported.

This scenario highlights the importance of chipping plants in the national economy and their key role in the export market for forest products. The upward trend of Eucalyptus nitens could signal a shift in forestry practices and global market preferences, with significant implications for future forest planning and management.
