Carabineros Recovers 150 Eucalyptus Trees in Paillaco
Carabineros of Los Ríos thwart a timber theft valued at 3 million pesos and arrest two individuals in the act.
In an operation carried out in the Los Ulmos sector of Paillaco, Carabineros de Chile managed to detain two individuals accused of illegally removing over 150 eucalyptus trees from a forestry property. The swift police action allowed for the recovery of the timber, estimated to be worth 3 million pesos.
The incident took place at the Santa Teresa property, where the site manager, a contractor for the forestry company An Chile, noticed suspicious activity and alerted the authorities. Upon arrival, police officers found the subjects in the act, loading the felled trees into three Chevrolet LUV pickup trucks.
Lieutenant Waldo Avendaño of the Paillaco Sub-station detailed that the eucalyptus trees reached up to 15 meters in height and that the arrest occurred while the individuals were still loading the timber. The detainees were taken to the Paillaco police station and later made available to the Guarantee Court for a detention control hearing and potential formal charges.
This incident highlights the issue of timber theft in the region, a crime that affects not only the local economy but also the environment and forest sustainability. The rapid response from Carabineros and the collaboration of forestry workers were key to preventing further loss of natural resources.
The Paillaco community and local authorities have expressed concern over these events and reiterate the importance of reporting any illegal activity that threatens forest heritage. The investigation continues to determine if more individuals are involved in this crime and to implement measures to prevent future incidents.
