A total of 1,094 wildfires were recorded during the first half of 2024 in the La Araucanía Region, according to the Semiannual Environmental Bulletin from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

The data shows that the fires have affected a total of 18,136.1 hectares, marking an 83.6% decrease in the area impacted compared to the 110,613.1 hectares recorded in the first half of 2023.

On the other hand, of the 1,094 wildfires recorded in the La Araucanía Region in the first half of 2024, 48.2% (527) occurred in Malleco Province, with the commune of Collipulli accounting for 130 fires, representing 11.9% of the regional total. Victoria ranked second with 98 wildfires, followed by Ercilla with 86 incidents.

Rainfall

Regarding rainfall in the city of Pucón, 1,187.7 millimeters (mm) accumulated during the first half of 2024, a 42.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023.

In the first half of 2024, total rainfall in Angol reached 1,055.8 mm, a 178.9% increase, while in Temuco, the rise was 102.8%, accumulating 755.1 mm compared to the same period the previous year.

Temperatures and Air Quality

In terms of temperatures, three heatwaves occurred in the region, with those in January and June being the longest, lasting four days. Meanwhile, there were 16 frosts, an increase of four episodes compared to the same period in 2023.

Regarding air pollution, the MP2.5 standard was exceeded at the monitoring stations in Padre Las Casas (25 days), Las Encinas Temuco (19 days), and Ñielol (17 days) during the first half of 2024.
