Forestry Contractors Question Cordero's Experience in Security Matters
The appointment of Luis Cordero as Undersecretary of the Interior raises concerns in forestry and agricultural sectors of the Southern Macrozona due to his more academic than security-focused background.
The arrival of Luis Cordero to the Undersecretary of the Interior has drawn criticism from forestry and agricultural unions, who express concern over his limited experience in handling rural violence in the Southern Macrozona.
René Muñoz, manager of the Association of Forestry Contractors, emphasized the need for the government to continue strengthening police work in the region and increase the allocation of resources, such as the installation of security cameras. However, confidence in Cordero's ability to advance these matters is low, given his academic trajectory and distance from the reality of the country's south.
"An academic, a professor with zero experience in what happens here—the truth is we don’t believe this will be progress. He doesn’t feel what we feel here in the south in terms of insecurity, crime, terrorism. Without a doubt, he lacks the on-the-ground experience that Undersecretary Monsalve clearly had," he told Radio Biobío.
Cordero's academic profile, who built his career in Santiago and previously served as Minister of Justice, contrasts with the expectations of the unions, which require an authority with direct experience in rural security.
Francisco Muñoz, manager of the NGO Campo Seguro, shares this perspective with the cited media outlet, though he remains hopeful that the new undersecretary can effectively focus on combating rural violence.
The Anti-Terrorism Law, currently under discussion in the Senate, is seen as a potential source of additional tools for the Undersecretary of the Interior, enabling better coordination with police forces and judicial bodies in prosecuting crimes linked to rural violence.
The last administration of Manuel Monsalve in the region, following an arson attack in Paillaco, had promised follow-up on security measures—a promise that remains unfulfilled.
