Wood Theft Ring Dismantled in Valdivia
Police operation in Valdivia concludes with the arrest of three individuals and the recovery of wood valued at over $460 million.
In a successful operation, detectives from the specialized Timber Theft Unit (SUMA) of the Criminal Investigation Brigade (Bicrim) of Valdivia, in collaboration with the Public Prosecutor's Office and the victims, arrested three men involved in the theft of wood from a property in the Casablanca sector, south of the Valdivia commune.
The seized assets, including pine wood and machinery, exceed $460 million.
The SUMA team, after a meticulous investigation, identified and tracked the suspects, who had illegally occupied a 36-hectare forest property for a year, cutting down trees without authorization or a management plan. The detainees, including the work supervisor, the truck driver, and the excavator operator, were caught in the act of illegal activity.
PDI officers recovered the property, along with 36 pieces of pine wood and abandoned logs at the site. Additionally, a truck with a self-loading crane, an excavator, and a pickup truck—all used in the crime—were seized. Two of the arrested individuals have prior police records.
The detainees were placed at the disposal of the Valdivia Guarantee Court to face the corresponding charges.
