The national company once again secured first place in the forestry and paper industry category of the prestigious ranking, which evaluates the most significant companies in the Americas, Asia Pacific, Oceania, and Europe based on their environmental, social, and financial performance.

Just like in 2023, CMPC was crowned the world's most sustainable company in the Paper & Forest Products sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI), one of the most important rankings in corporate sustainability that assesses the planet's most relevant companies.

Since 1999, this ranking has consisted of 61 categories, evaluating the sustainability of the 2,500 largest companies listed on the U.S. stock exchange, or Dow Jones, through a series of indices. It analyzes the top 10% most relevant companies, assessing them on economic, environmental, and social criteria.

It is here that CMPC achieved first place in its category, repeating its 2023 success and improving upon its 2022 and 2021 rankings, when it secured second place in its sector.

"The decisions and actions we take as a company are always guided by the positive impacts we can generate through our operations in the local communities and territories where we operate. Being named the world's most sustainable forestry and paper company for the second consecutive year leaves us with the great task of continuing to work day by day to maintain this position. This is a special recognition for the entire CMPC team, whose efforts help create a better world by contributing to the fight against climate change and building fairer territories with improved quality of life for people," said Francisco Ruiz-Tagle, CEO of CMPC.

Sustainability as a Pillar

Since 2017, CMPC has been working on a comprehensive sustainability strategy for the future, with a strategic approach based on three pillars: risks faced by the company and society, material issues, and a commitment to the principles of the Global Compact, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the 2030 Agenda. In total, CMPC aligns with 14 of the 17 United Nations SDGs.

As part of this commitment, CMPC has implemented a 2030 strategy aimed at consolidating world-class standards and expanding its scale through five key pillars: Sustainability, Growth & Innovation, Talent, Competitiveness, and Customer. It is in the first of these pillars that CMPC has developed a series of projects that earned it the top spot in the DJSI's Paper & Forest Products category.

Among the company's environmental sustainability goals are achieving net-zero emissions by 2040, reducing industrial water use per ton of product by 25% by 2025, achieving zero waste sent to landfills by 2025, adding 100,000 hectares of conservation or protected land by 2030, and enhancing the circularity of its products.

A highlight in the environmental pillar is the Patagonia Project, an unprecedented initiative that will add over 26,000 hectares of conservation in Chile's Aysén Region on former productive lands of the company. Additionally, in one of Chile's most significant genetic milestones in recent times, the DNA genome of the Araucaria Araucana—a native species currently at risk of extinction—was sequenced, a discovery that will aid in the species' preservation.

Working with Communities

The company received significant recognition for the work of the CMPC – Duoc UC Nacimiento Campus, a higher education and vocational training institution renowned for its dual education model for students, which was awarded at the Duoc UC Community Engagement Congress. Other notable initiatives in this pillar include the Water Challenge for Chile, which provides drinking water solutions for rural areas in the Biobío and La Araucanía regions; the Puente Alto Social Pantry, an almost-free supermarket for elderly residents in the Metropolitan Region; scholarships for thousands of university students; entrepreneurship and development funds; and the First Peoples project, which trains entrepreneurs and artisans in southern Chile to produce and market their creations in two stores—one in Temuco and another in Vitacura.

International Recognition

Finally, in the realm of financial sustainability, CMPC has undertaken a series of projects that have earned it international recognition. Examples include its green bond issuance, recognized by LatinFinance earlier this year; the Fastmarkets Forest Products PPI Awards 2024 for CEO of the Year, awarded to Francisco Ruiz-Tagle for his work in innovation, sustainability, and financial results; and its inclusion in the 2024 S&P Global Sustainability Yearbook as one of the world's most sustainable companies.
