GORE Bío Bío Requests National Prosecutor to Assign Special Team to Investigate Wildfire Cases
During the launch of CMPC's wildfire prevention campaign, the regional governor of Bío Bío, Rodrigo Díaz, urged National Prosecutor Ángel Valencia to designate a specialized team to investigate wildfire cases from his position.
"There is an unresolved aspect... and it is that in Chile, only 1% of wildfires are penalized. I humbly ask Mr. Valencia to please allocate dedicated teams of Public Ministry personnel (...)," stated Díaz.
The authority noted that, based on his experience with large-scale wildfires in previous years, there have been delays in investigations, leading to a lack of prosecution for those responsible.
"(...) We ask for innovation because investigations two or three months later are no longer useful, as the crime scene has been altered. What we need is more agility, as it is what we lack to complete the virtuous cycle," emphasized the governor.
In 2023, the Bío Bío region was one of the most affected by wildfires in Chile, with 181,796 hectares burned. This represents a 34.32% increase compared to 2017.
