  • A report from the Prosecutor's Office reveals an increase in arrests for crimes linked to wildfires, with emphasis on the regions of Los Lagos and La Araucanía.

In a year marked by environmental concerns, the Prosecutor's Office reported that 49 people have been detained for their alleged involvement in crimes related to wildfires across Chile. These crimes include forest burning, possession of incendiary devices, destruction of vegetation, and improper use of fire. According to data provided by Emol, all detainees have undergone detention hearings and face precautionary measures.

According to Emol, the regions most affected by these illegal practices are Los Lagos and La Araucanía, with 10 suspects each, followed by Maule with 7, O’Higgins with 6, and Biobío and Ñuble with 4 respectively. Despite the Valparaíso Region suffering the most devastating wildfires, with a tragic toll of 134 fatalities, only three arrests have been reported.

In the Metropolitan Region, two arrests have been made, while Atacama, Aysén, and Magallanes record one detainee per region. To date, no arrests related to wildfires have been reported in Arica, Antofagasta, Tarapacá, Coquimbo, and Los Ríos.

This report highlights the need for greater awareness and prevention regarding the protection of our forests and natural environments. Authorities continue to investigate and work to apprehend those who endanger biodiversity and community safety.
