  • The association highlights the need to review strategies and improve legislation in response to the growing issue of wildfires in the country.

The Association of Forestry Engineers issued an alert regarding the concerning increase in intentional wildfires, which every summer result in thousands of affected individuals and the destruction of vast areas of land. Despite a historically high budget allocated to combat these disasters, current strategies appear insufficient given the scale of the problem.

The association's statement notes that, ten years after a similar tragedy, lessons have not been learned, and it urges a review of firefighting tactics. With a budget of 148 billion pesos—97% higher than the previous season—the current situation has led to the deadliest wildfire season in the country's recent history.

Forestry engineers emphasize that wildfires are not only a public safety issue but also carry social, environmental, and economic consequences. Prevention, early detection, and firefighting in initial stages are key, and resources must be focused on these areas before tragedies occur.

Additionally, the association suggests implementing preventive emergency measures, such as surveillance in high-risk areas and the use of advanced technology, including satellite imagery and drones, to combat the intentionality of fires. They also highlight the absence of nighttime aerial firefighting in Chile, a tool that could significantly improve emergency responses near populated areas.

The Association of Forestry Engineers also advocates for the continuity of strategic roles in wildfire prevention and combat, regardless of government changes, and criticizes shortcomings in the current draft legislation, which fails to adequately address the risk of intentional or negligent fires.

Finally, the statement acknowledges the courage and sacrifice of all those fighting this tragedy, from firefighters to volunteers, and underscores the need for collective commitment to improve the situation.
