Preservation and Restoration of Native Forests Is More Important Than Ever
• The Bosques y Vida Foundation leads a Latin American initiative to restore Andean forests, vital for water conservation and natural disaster prevention.
The Bosques y Vida Foundation, under the presidency of Juan Ignacio Boudon, has taken a leading role in the fight against the climate crisis in Latin America. Focusing on the Andes mountain range, the organization has restored over 10 million trees, including native species. This effort not only improves the quality of life for local communities but also plays a crucial role in climate regulation and water conservation—an increasingly scarce resource.
The executive told Soy TV that native forests act as water sinks, absorbing rainfall and regulating its flow, which prevents erosion and floods. At a time when Chile and other countries face a severe water crisis, the preservation and restoration of these ecosystems is more important than ever. Additionally, native forests host unique biodiversity, whose protection is essential for maintaining ecological balance.
He emphasized that Acción Andina, the Foundation's flagship project, works in five Andean countries in close collaboration with local communities, who possess ancestral knowledge of the land. This approach ensures not only the effective restoration of forests but also the strengthening of sustainable practices and the well-being of indigenous populations.
The positive impact of Acción Andina has not gone unnoticed. The initiative has been recognized as a flagship project by the UN and has received an award granted by Prince William. These accolades highlight the importance of voluntary action and the role of NGOs in environmental protection, complementing state and private policies.
Boudon pointed out that the irrational deforestation of the last two centuries has left a deep mark on the Andes. However, with stronger environmental regulations and greater awareness in the private sector, there is hope to reverse the damage and move toward a greener future. The work of Acción Andina and its partners is a crucial step in this direction, ensuring that future generations inherit a healthier and more resilient planet.
