How the deadly attack on police officers in Cañete unfolded

In an event that has shaken the community of Cañete and the entire nation, three members of Chile's Carabineros were murdered in a violent attack in the early hours of this Saturday. Initial reports indicate that the police patrol was ambushed after encountering a fallen tree on the road, forcing them to stop.

The police vehicle showed ballistic impacts and was found burned with the officers' bodies inside.

Emergency calls to 133 began at 00:50, reporting a vehicle on fire in the Antiquina area. Firefighters and authorities quickly arrived at the scene, but unfortunately, the three officers had already died. It is speculated that the patrol may have been responding to an emergency call, though the exact reason for their presence at the attack site has not been officially confirmed.

The fallen officers
Carlos Cisterna Navarro, First Sergeant with 24 years of service, was the father of a 6-year-old boy. His distinguished career was marked by acts of bravery, such as repelling an armed attack in 2016, which earned him commendation for his professionalism. He received his last promotion in May 2022 and had been trained in human rights and police intervention techniques.

Sergio Arévalo Lobo, First Corporal with 14 years of service, leaves behind a one-year-old son. He was decorated multiple times for his professionalism and effectiveness, including his involvement in the arrest of an armed individual and the recovery of stolen livestock.

Misael Vidal Cid, also a First Corporal, was 30 years old with 10 years of service. Married and father to a 3-year-old child, his career in Carabineros was defined by commitment and dedication, earning him praise for his professional work.
The community and the Carabineros institution mourn the loss of these three public servants. Investigations continue to clarify the facts and bring those responsible for this tragic act to justice.
