After triple homicide in Cañete: Supreme Court Minister believes Carabineros should prioritize crime control
- Additionally, Arturo Prado, former judicial inspector of Biobío courts, is open to other options for precautionary measures.
The three Carabineros officers—Sergeant Carlos Cisterna and Corporals Sergio Arévalo and Misael Vidal—were enforcing a precautionary measure of house arrest when they were ambushed and killed in the early hours of Saturday, April 27, in Cañete, Biobío Region.
Both the uniformed police and the Regional Prosecutor's Office of La Araucanía are working to identify those responsible for the crime, a case that shook the country and reignited a debate within the institution. This is not the first time the dangers faced by police officers in the area have been discussed, as they monitor precautionary and protective measures in hard-to-reach and dangerous sectors where organized rural violence exists.
In this context, Supreme Court Minister Arturo Prado, who served as the judicial inspector of Biobío courts for three years, stated that "for the time being, Carabineros de Chile should focus its efforts on prioritizing functions related to controlling the most conflict-ridden areas of crime or rural violence and population safety, through permanent patrols in hotspots of heightened violence." He added, "enforcing measures like nighttime house arrest can sometimes be a significant burden for Carabineros, considering that rural residences where compliance is verified are often located far from urban areas."
Regarding potential alternatives to relieve Carabineros of this task, the judge suggested: "This precautionary measure could be supplemented by requiring the accused to periodically sign in, either at the Prosecutor's Office or at Carabineros facilities," which "adequately ensures the accused remains connected to the legal process."
