  • Juan Andrés Anzieta, Manager of Forests and Sustainability at the company, discussed in Conversando con la Acoforag his proposal for sustainable textile cellulose, setting a trend in the fashion industry.

At the recent edition of "Challenge the Fabric," a conference held in Milan, Arauco, a leading company in textile pulp production, presented its innovative vision on sustainability in the fashion industry.

Juan Andrés Anzieta, Manager of Forests and Sustainability at Arauco, shared in the 41st edition of Conversando con la Acoforag how the company is transforming textile production through cellulosic fibers—a cleaner and less polluting alternative to cotton and petroleum-derived fibers.

The "Challenge the Fabric" conference is a meeting point for key players in fashion, from major brands to raw material producers. Arauco, as a textile pulp manufacturer, was invited to showcase its commitment to sustainability and the use of cellulosic fibers.

These fibers, derived from pure cellulose produced at the Valdivia plant, are exported to textile industry giants in China and India, where they are transformed into rayon or viscose.

Anzieta explained that the cellulose used comes from wood, which, after a cooking process, becomes a high-purity substance. This pure cellulose is the basis for producing cellulosic yarns, which are then braided and sold to the textile industry for creating various fabrics, whether pure viscose or blended with other materials.

The company's proposal focuses not only on product quality but also on its environmental advantages. "Cellulosic fiber requires less water, emits less CO2, and is less harmful to the planet compared to other traditional fibers. Additionally, the company highlights that this fiber is becoming increasingly price-competitive and offers a significant contribution to the fight against global warming," explained the executive.

He added that participation in "Challenge the Fabric" demonstrates the fashion industry's growing interest in sustainable alternatives. The company aims to lead the shift toward a future where fashion is not only synonymous with trends but also with environmental responsibility.
