Prosecutor Garrido on Llaitul's prison sentence: It is perfectly possible that he continues to lead CAM
- The leader of CAM, Héctor Llaitul, remains imprisoned in Concepción, while his defense finalizes the nullity appeal they will file regarding the trial that sentenced him to 23 years in prison for various crimes.
The regional prosecutor ofLa Araucanía, Roberto Garrido, did not rule out the possibility that the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM) could continue operating and that it may not be dismantled.
This is despite the fact that its leader, Héctor Llaitul, has been sentenced to 23 years in prison and that the group's leadership is in preventive detention for various cases.
Prosecutor Garrido clarified the above when asked about the effect that the 23-year effective prison sentence could have on the group's actions.
Considering that, for years, CAM has claimed responsibility for numerous violent acts in the Southern Macrozone and that its leader could continue operating even from within prison.
Meanwhile, the Republican Party's floor leader, Stephan Schubert, stated that the prosecutor's remarks acknowledge that Chile's prison system is not prepared for the current criminal reality.
For Amarillos deputy and former regional governor of La Araucanía, Andrés Jouannet, the government must intervene to prevent what Prosecutor Garrido suggested from happening.
