Carabineros Trained in Forest Legislation and Oversight Topics
- The initiative took place in Alerce Costero National Park, in the La Romaza sector, La Unión.
Aimed at informing about CONAF’s oversight role, primarily related to compliance with current forest and environmental legislation, a workshop was held for the personnel of the Rural Intervention Patrols of the Carabineros from the Valdivia Prefecture.
Regarding the initiative, CONAF’s regional director, Arnoldo Shibar, stated, “We are conducting training for the Carabineros’ Rural Intervention group, which establishes direct support related precisely to oversight of unauthorized actions, property inspections, and controls, both on roads and at storage sites. This instance involves both classroom activities, covering regulatory and procedural topics, and fieldwork, where the procedures carried out by the Corporation were demonstrated. The idea is for Carabineros de Chile to later support us in these types of activities.”
Meanwhile, Sergeant 2° Gerald Reyes, in charge of the Rural Intervention Patrol of the Valdivia Prefecture, noted, “This activity arose from the implementation of these patrols and the need to train Carabineros personnel by CONAF, to work together on joint operations we will be conducting.”
He added, “We have already worked on roadside oversight, issues related to trucks transporting wood, and this training is important and crucial to learn more and understand CONAF’s work. In turn, we can perform better in accordance with Law 21.488 (on timber theft) and other oversight matters that also fall under Carabineros’ jurisdiction.”
Among the activities, presentations on various topics stood out, such as “Oversight: The Importance of Forests” and “Forest-Soil-Water Relationship,” as well as the use of technology in forests, measurement of surfaces and products, procedures and articles of Supreme Decree 276, and the use of fire for controlled burns, among others.
The activities took place over two days at the facilities of Alerce Costero National Park, in the La Romaza sector, La Unión commune.
