Sustainable Forest Development Plan Promoted for the Los Lagos Region
- The initiative aims to incentivize the sector's value chain.
As part of the Pact for a Sustainable and Inclusive Region, the forestry sector governance began working on the development of a ten-year Sustainable Forest Development Plan for Los Lagos.
The initiative seeks to create a system of incentives for the development of the forestry value chain and corresponds to one of the 14 prioritized commitments of the forestry sector. To this end, work is already underway to systematize available information regarding existing native forests, labor, available biomass for heating, contributions to the regional economy, including an update on the areas of forest plantations in the region to project future work.
Additionally, it proposes the need to establish a public-private platform that presents a pilot proposal for business models for different regional forest products and improvements for forest producers.
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
For the president of the governance body, also the leader of the Enelsur Group, Jorge Wendler, "there is significant progress by this committee, working in these first meetings of 2024 on 10 of the 14 prioritized commitments, as this will allow for 'an interesting proposal for the new governor. I believe that with willingness, the coSustainable Forest Development Plan for the Los Lagos Region can be achieved."
PLANNING
The initiative aims to incentivize the sector's value chain. The platform, which includes private sector representatives, seeks to implement a corporate social responsibility program focused on the environmental protection of forests and neighboring communities. This initiative was presented in the last session by Corma representative Claudia Álvarez.
It proposes designing and implementing a comprehensive plan for monitoring the transportation of forest products using technological and traditional tools for this purpose, along with promoting incentives that facilitate the organization of forest producers in each link of the forestry value chain. Additionally, the forestry sector governance has deemed it necessary to contribute to municipal development plans and urban planning instruments with a vision of designing green lungs by 2030 in the region's main cities, alongside validating a watershed management model with appropriate silvicultural management for water resource management. Efforts will also be made to promote initiatives ensuring the use of 100% dry, traceable firewood and increasing quality inspections of this fuel.
