Curfew Lifted in Arauco After Months of Restrictions
- The measure, implemented following the death of three police officers, comes to an end due to progress in the investigation and improvements in local security.
After a period marked by nighttime movement restrictions in the provinces of Biobío and Arauco, Rear Admiral Óscar Manzano, Chief of National Defense for the area, announced this Friday the definitive end of the curfew. The measure had been imposed in response to the murder of three police officers in Cañete in April 2024, aiming to control violence and protect citizens' safety.
The lifting of the curfew, which affected the communes of Cañete, Contulmo, and Tirúa, is justified by progress in the investigation of the events and the stabilization of living conditions in the involved communes. "The curfew measure enacted by this authority is hereby lifted, effective immediately," states the official communication, thus removing all restrictions on personal and movement freedoms.
Rear Admiral Manzano emphasized that the decision was made considering the State's responsibility to protect its citizens and ensure security in the affected areas. The measure had been implemented under Supreme Decree No. 189 of 2022 from the Ministry of the Interior and Public Security, which declared a State of Constitutional Emergency in the Araucanía Region and the provinces of Arauco and Biobío.
During the months the curfew was in effect, adjustments were made to the restriction hours, seeking a balance between security and the normalcy of daily life. The announcement of the end of this measure has been widely disseminated through mass media and social networks to ensure both the population and security forces are informed of the immediate change.
The residents of the Biobío and Arauco provinces welcome the news with relief, hoping that the normalization of nighttime activities will contribute to the economic and social recovery of the communes affected by the curfew.
