Forestry Industry in Paraguay Aims to Attract Over US$15 Billion in Investments and Generate Employment Opportunities
- Sectoral specialist for forestry industries and floriculture at Rediex, José Ayala, stated in an article that the country has a tremendous opportunity to generate wealth for national well-being through the forestry sector.
José Ayala, sectoral specialist for forestry industries and floriculture at Rediex, noted that Paraguay expects the development of its forestry sector to attract investments exceeding US$15 billion, creating numerous job opportunities.
According to the specialist, this growth will drive the construction of new road and port infrastructure, as well as improve communications and transportation, with the potential to develop railway networks.
“Currently, Paraguay’s forestry sector is in transition, moving from a system based on native forest exploitation and primary processing of extracted raw materials—with low-quality market demands—to a scenario of high economic, environmental, and social impact,” he explains in an article published on the IP Paraguay platform.
Based on this outlook, Ayala believes this new scenario will require competitiveness, necessitating the expansion of forest plantations at ambitious rates, upgrading existing industries with technology, and attracting foreign direct investment across the sector’s entire production chain.
In his view, this will enable the establishment of large-scale forestry industries, expanded plantations, and the creation of adequate infrastructure, ultimately positioning the forestry sector as a key contributor to the national economy through its impact on Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
“With all this, forestry development will invigorate local and national economies, generating employment for our citizens. This progress can be achieved while fulfilling Paraguay’s international commitments to ecosystem resilience and sustainability,” he emphasizes.
He also highlights that, in a broader context, the forestry industry’s value chain roundtable holds great importance, as it will serve as a platform for dialogue,
coordination, and alignment of actions among key sectoral stakeholders—both public and private—in line with the strategic importance of the forestry sector, guiding and structuring the desired development.
“The effective execution of institutional, inter-institutional, and public-private integration tasks within the forestry industry’s value chain roundtable will, in the medium term, result in an exponential increase in the sector’s contribution to the national economy,”
In this context, he recalls that the first meeting among stakeholders took place in early July, following the established plan. To date, a competitiveness matrix proposal has been developed, featuring new strategic components or axes to be addressed in specialized “committees” composed of key actors based on their areas of expertise, legal authority, or interest.
“Paraguay has a tremendous opportunity in the development of this space to generate wealth for national well-being,” concludes the article.
