Arson attack in Curacautín leaves machinery damaged
- A banner found at the crime scene points to the Mapuche Malleco Resistance as the possible perpetrator of the incident.
In the quiet commune of Curacautín, the early hours of the morning were disrupted by an arson attack that left an excavator with significant damage. The incident, which took place in the Rari Ruca sector, resulted in no injuries but left a clear mark of violence in the region.
Commissioner Patricio Ibáñez, from the Special Police Investigations Brigade (Bipe) of the PDI, confirmed that the event occurred around 2 a.m., when unidentified individuals broke into private property to set the machinery on fire.
Investigators found a banner at the scene with a message that reads "remove the aggregates from Mapuche territory," signed by the Mapuche Malleco Resistance, suggesting a motive linked to the territorial conflict in the region.
Despite the severity of the incident, the use of firearms during the attack was ruled out.
Prosecutor Néstor Riquelme instructed the involvement of BIPE and the Criminal Investigation Brigade (BICRIM) to clarify the facts and identify those responsible.
The presidential delegate of La Araucanía, José Montalva, expressed his firm intention to find the perpetrators of the attack, mentioning that, despite a decrease in acts of violence, there are groups that continue to operate in the region and will be pursued with the same determination as in previous cases.
Montalva emphasized that the attacks serve no other purpose than to "generate crime, violence, and hinder any kind of entrepreneurship that benefits the citizens," reaffirming the government's commitment to confront and resolve these acts of violence that affect coexistence and development in La Araucanía.
The community of Curacautín and its surroundings remain on alert as authorities continue their investigations. This attack adds to a series of similar incidents that have shaken the region in recent times, highlighting the urgent need to find lasting solutions to the territorial conflict and associated violence.
