Gang Caught Illegally Logging Native Forest in Cunco

In an operation carried out by Carabineros, three men were detained in the El Salto sector, 4 kilometers from Cunco, while illegally logging native forest. The police action took place after receiving a report alerting about the illicit activity within the Santa Ana property.
The subjects, caught using a portable sawmill, were apprehended on the spot. The operation led to the seizure of two 4X4 vehicles, a portable sawmill, three chainsaws, fuel, and various tools. Additionally, a pair of oxen involved was returned to its owner.
Captain Alexis Carriel, commissioner of the 7th Villarrica Police Station, detailed the discovery and subsequent arrest of the individuals aged 42, 37, and 52, who had no prior criminal records. Presented before the Temuco Guarantee Court, the accused were released on conditional freedom, required to sign in monthly at the Carabineros station. They were also placed under national confinement and prohibited from approaching the affected property.
The owners of the Santa Ana property have estimated the losses and damages caused by the illegal logging at over $120 million, highlighting the severity of the crime committed against natural heritage and the local economy.
