Prosecutor's Office Reveals Motive and Progress in Investigation of Crime that Shocked Biobío
- The regional prosecutor of La Araucanía, Roberto Garrido, reported that the attack aimed to steal the officers' weapons and that there is "solid evidence" against the accused.
In a crucial turn for one of the most shocking cases of violence against police in Chile, the regional prosecutor of La Araucanía, Roberto Garrido, has provided key details about the arrest of the three suspects in the triple homicide of Carabineros in Cañete.
The accused, identified as Felipe Antihuen Santi, Yeferson Antihuen Santi, and Nicolás Rivas Paillao, were captured in simultaneous operations in Cañete and Huechuraba. A fourth individual involved, Tomás Antihuen Santi, remains at large.
Prosecutor Garrido explained that the investigation suggests the attackers sought to strip the Carabineros of their weapons and that one of the detainees already had a prior record of assaults against police. Despite progress, the firearms used in the crime have not yet been recovered.
The national prosecutor, Ángel Valencia, backed Garrido's statements, assuring that the Prosecutor's Office has "solid evidence" against the accused. The formal charges against the detainees will be conducted remotely, where they will face charges for the homicides of Senior Non-Commissioned Officers Carlos Cisterna, Sergio Arévalo, and Misael Vidal.
The President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, who is on an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, referred to the arrests as reinforcing the conviction that "all branches of the State" are committed to pursuing and capturing the guilty parties. This message was reiterated by Vice President Carolina Tohá and Government Spokesperson Camila Vallejo, who emphasized the investigative work and pursuit of all cases of violence against Carabineros during their administration.
The community of Cañete and the Chilean nation await justice for the deaths of the three officers, in a case that has highlighted the need for effective collaboration between different branches of government and security forces. Meanwhile, authorities continue the search for the fugitive and any others involved in this act of violence that has deeply impacted Chilean society.
