US$55 Million Allocated for New Sawmill in La Unión

• The Environmental Assessment Commission of Los Ríos gives the green light to an ambitious timber project that promises to generate employment and boost the local economy.

In a landmark decision for the region's timber industry, the Environmental Assessment Commission of Los Ríos approved the installation of a modern sawmill in La Unión. This project, led by the company Foracción SPA, represents a $55 million investment and is expected to create around 570 jobs during the construction and operational phases.

The sawmill, which will span over 25 hectares, will feature specialized sheds for processing and storing wood destined for export. The facility will have the capacity to handle 128 cubic meters of wood per hour and will focus on producing sawn timber as well as remanufacturing finger-jointed wood blocks.

The project stands out not only for its scale and cutting-edge technology but also for its commitment to sustainability. Byproducts of the process, such as wood chips, sawdust, and bark, will be reused as fuel for the plant's biomass boiler and will also be available for sale to third parties.

The Presidential Delegate of Los Ríos, Jorge Alvial, has emphasized the positive impact the sawmill will have on the local economy, highlighting job creation and the boost to high-quality timber exports. However, exact dates for the start of construction and the beginning of operations have not yet been announced.

The approval of this project is a clear indicator of the growth potential of the Los Ríos region in the timber sector and its ability to attract significant investments that contribute to economic and social development.
