Maule Begins Strategies for a Safer Wildfire Season

• Authorities and entities in Maule come together in a technical committee to strengthen wildfire prevention and firefighting measures ahead of the 2024-2025 season.

The Maule Region is determinedly preparing to face the 2024-2025 wildfire season. During a meeting in Linares, led by the regional presidential delegate, Humberto Aqueveque Díaz, representatives from various institutions gathered to review and improve prevention and emergency response strategies. Collaboration between the public and private sectors has been key to the notable reduction in incidents during the previous season, and efforts aim to continue this positive trend.

During the meeting, the results of the 2023-2024 season were analyzed, highlighting the significant reduction in wildfire impact and occurrence thanks to the preventive and firefighting measures implemented. Aqueveque especially thanked the Chilean Wood Corporation (Corma) and private institutions for their coordinated work, which has helped position Maule as the second region with the greatest decrease in wildfire-related issues.

The director of the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), María Isabel Florido, emphasized the importance of inter-institutional coordination and the need to leave no aspect to chance to minimize wildfire occurrences. Meanwhile, Leonardo Vergara, manager of Corma, stated that despite the positive results achieved through public-private management, vigilance must not waver, as extreme conditions are anticipated for the upcoming season.

The technical committee, which will continue with future meetings—including one on September 3 in Cauquenes—aims to involve all 30 mayors of the region to ensure comprehensive coverage and preparedness. This joint effort among regional and provincial authorities, Senapred, Conaf, Corma, the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Army, and Carabineros, among others, is a clear example of the importance of collaboration and discipline in natural disaster prevention and management.

The Maule Region is demonstrating proactivity and commitment in the fight against wildfires, with the hope of protecting its valuable natural heritage and ensuring the safety of its inhabitants.
