Alfredo Moreno on the Commission for Peace and Understanding: "We have a long history of discrimination (...) we have forgotten our own roots"
- The work carried out during this time "is basically about talking with all the involved groups because the mission is to find a solution acceptable to everyone."
As November of this year marks the deadline set by President Boric to deliver the report with the conclusions of the Commission for Peace and Understanding, the co-chair of the commission, Alfredo Moreno, addressed the progress and fears of the initiative.
In a conversation with Radio Infinita, he explained that the work done during this time "is basically about talking with all the involved groups because the mission is to find a solution acceptable to everyone." "We have significant infiltration by organized crime," as well as the presence of "drugs, weapons, and atrocious crimes like those we experienced with the murdered Carabineros in Cañete."
He added that due to years of violence and misunderstanding, they seek to change that history, explaining that "we have a historical conflict rooted in the creation of the nation-state in Chile, but beyond that, we then have a long history of discrimination, poverty (...) we have forgotten our own roots."
He noted that people feel great hopelessness about the process due to previous government efforts that have failed. "This happens in many countries, from Canada to Chile, where there were European conquerors, where nation-states were later formed, and all of them led to taking indigenous land and relocating them to reservations, with greater harshness than in Chile or even harsher."
Thus, as the deadline for presenting their conclusions in November approaches, Moreno stated that "we have set ourselves a task that we intentionally made more difficult because we have a commission with eight very diverse members." He affirmed that they have decided that "anything we propose will be done unanimously because we won’t achieve this if we face opposition from the Communists or Republicans, or from Group A or Group B. Here, we need everyone’s support."
