  • Crews battle flames threatening populated areas, which have already consumed 40 hectares.

A raging wildfire has prompted authorities to declare a red alert in the commune of Río Hurtado. The fire, which broke out in the Los Huapis area, is spreading uncontrollably and has already scorched 40 hectares of vegetation, endangering nearby populated zones.

Mayor Juana Olivares expressed her concern on Thursday night, stating that the fire is "extremely out of control." In response to the emergency, crews from the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) and volunteer firefighters from Río Hurtado and neighboring communes are working tirelessly to combat the flames and protect residents' homes.

Containment efforts are being hampered by strong winds sweeping through the region, which are precursors to an approaching frontal system. These adverse weather conditions have exacerbated the situation, making firefighting efforts more challenging.

As a precautionary measure, authorities have carried out the preventive evacuation of approximately 200 people due to the fire's rapid spread. Fortunately, partial control of the situation has been achieved as hours pass.

The Regional Disaster and Emergency Risk Committee (Cogrid) is expected to provide an update on the fire's status and the measures to be taken to ensure the safety of residents and their properties.
The Río Hurtado community remains on edge as the battle against this natural disaster continues, hoping for improved conditions that will allow the fire to be fully extinguished.
