Small and Medium-Sized Timber Entrepreneurs and Forestry Contractors Accuse Severe Sector Crisis
- Lack of raw materials caused by fires, but especially by the State's decision not to promote reforestation for ideological reasons, are part of the causes of the crisis.
Small and medium-sized timber entrepreneurs and the forestry contractors' guild are denouncing a severe crisis in the sector.
In this regard, they accuse ideological reasons behind the stagnation of reforestation in degraded lands and call for resuming a process to prevent the total collapse of SMEs in this productive sector.
A 50% drop in timber SME exports and the closure of 46% of medium-sized sawmills are among the issues warned by Pymemad, the guild representing small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in the sector.
Its president, Michel Esquerré, pointed to the lack of raw materials caused by fires, but above all by the State's decision not to promote reforestation for ideological reasons.
While acknowledging a decrease in attacks on forestry companies, the president of Acoforag, René Muñoz, which brings together contractors in the sector, warns that this comes at the cost of surrendering vast territories where work is not being carried out due to safety concerns.
The guilds argue that SMEs, not large corporations, are bearing the brunt of the crisis and urge the acceleration of policies to sustain this productive sector.
