  • Police intervention against Weichán Auka Mapu ends in clashes and multiple arrests.

In a large-scale operation carried out by the Investigative Police (PDI) in the communes of Tirúa and Cañete, Biobío region, one individual was reported dead and a detective was injured by gunfire.

The police action, aimed at arresting 19 individuals linked to the radical group Weichán Auka Mapu, has so far resulted in at least 7 arrests.

The High Complexity Prosecutor's Office of La Araucanía, together with a significant number of PDI officers, conducted raids and searches in various properties to execute arrest warrants issued by the Carahue Guarantee Court. The suspects are allegedly connected to Weichán Auka Mapu, a group blamed for several arson attacks in southern Chile.

During the operation, Echivaldo Bastias Vidal lost his life, while a detective sustained gunshot wounds. Additionally, weapons, ammunition, camouflage clothing, bulletproof vests, communication equipment, and electronic devices were seized. The arrests are linked to the murder of Mapuche community member Manuel Huenupil, who was killed in May 2022 in Carahue.

The detainees have been transferred to a PDI station, awaiting their court appearance for detention review and formalization of charges.
