Campaign Launched to Prevent Forest Fires in Tumbes Park
- The initiative involved the intervention of 300 m2 and was made possible thanks to an investment exceeding $104 million.
The Municipality of Talcahuano and the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) launched a forest fire prevention campaign in Tumbes Park through activities aimed at raising awareness among the Los Cerros community about actions that can trigger such disasters.
During the event, an activity was held with students from the Escuela Especial Nidal, who painted signs with messages about the care of native forests. Additionally, a talk was given to firefighters, police, public safety personnel, and the attending community.
Later, the signs were installed in the grassland area, one of the park's busiest spots, where poor practices—such as illegal dumping and the use of campfires—are commonly observed, endangering the conservation of this ancient forest and its high ecological value.
Solange Jara Carrasco, Director of the Environmental Department of the Talcahuano Municipality, stated, "Considering that we are about to enter the fire season, we wanted to prepare, especially in the context of national holidays, as Tumbes Park is a highly visited spot for locals."
Meanwhile, Giovanny Serey, Provincial Head of Conaf, explained, "The priority at this time of year is to strengthen the fire prevention campaign with the communities surrounding the park, as they are the primary users of this space." He also emphasized, "No matter how much effort Conaf or the Municipality puts in, it is the residents who must take precautions and learn about prevention."
This campaign will continue with a series of activities during the critical spring and summer months to educate the nearby community about the care and protection of this unique ecosystem in Talcahuano.
