CAM Fugitive Captured in Temuco
- Oscar Hernán Cañupan Calfin, a member of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator, was arrested without incident by the police.
During an operation carried out this Friday, officers from the Southern Macrozone Prefecture managed to capture Oscar Hernán Cañupan Calfin, a member of the Arauco Malleco Coordinator (CAM), who was a fugitive from justice. Cañupan Calfin had an active arrest warrant for the crime of arson causing damage, issued by the Guarantee Court of Los Ángeles.
The arrest took place in the Labranza sector of Temuco and proceeded without altercations or injuries among the police personnel. The operation was executed successfully and without compromising the safety of those involved.
The detained individual had already been formally charged for his participation in an arson attack that occurred in November 2023 in the commune of Quilleco, located in the Biobío Region. This incident adds to a series of violent acts that have affected the southern part of the country, where the CAM has been implicated in several of them.
The Arauco Malleco Coordinator is a Mapuche organization that has been at the center of controversy for its struggle to reclaim ancestral lands, often using tactics that include property destruction. Its actions have sparked widespread debate about indigenous rights and the State's response to the demands of the Mapuche people.
With the capture of Cañupan Calfin, authorities hope to clarify further details about recent attacks and advance toward peaceful solutions to the conflict. The situation in the region remains tense, with both the government and indigenous communities seeking paths to mutual understanding.
The arrest of this CAM member could represent a turning point in the confrontational dynamics that have characterized the relationship between the Chilean State and indigenous groups. Meanwhile, Cañupan Calfin will be brought before the courts to face the charges against him.
